Representative Grijalva visits San Luis Walk-in Clinic

Pediatricians and nurses at San Luis Walk-In Clinic, Inc. are sending families home from check-ups with free books and a very important prescription – “read aloud to your children.” Representative Grijalva visited the health center, not only to cheer them on, but also to practice what doctors preach by reading to a group of young patients.

Reach Out and Read Yuma welcomes the very first Reach Out and Read site in Yuma County---San Luis Walk-in Clinic, San Luis, AZ

About San Luis Walk-in Clinic:
The San Luis Walk- in Clinic is located in a small border community that is growing every year. They also have a clinic located in Somerton that is also offering ROR for the families they serve.   Dr. Jose Munoz is the Pediatrician of the clinic and is very excited to be a part of Reach Out and Read. He said he likes to see the smiles of the children when he shows them their new book. Since a lot of his patients are children of farm workers he said that the tractor and farm books are the children’s favorites. The Parents also have favorites, the bilingual books have been a big hit in San Luis. Apparently the parents will read to the child in Spanish than the older Brother or Sister will read the same book to the child in English. This gives the whole family a way to participate in reading.

The Office Manager, Elena Rodriguez, said that she was glad that Reach Out and Read found its way to San Luis because the children in San Luis need programs like this to help them succeed in school. She mentioned that San Luis has a few schools that are considered failing because of 3rd Grade reading scores.

The San Luis Walk-In Clinic will serve approximately 1,500 children this year between both locations.
