Reading is doctor-recommended
Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.
Doctors and nurses know that growing up healthy means growing up with books. The Reach Out and Read program provides the tools to help promote children's developmental skills and later school success.

Reach Out and Read Arizona: It’s Working and It’s Working Well
The evidence is clear. Reach Out and Read Arizona works … and it’s working well. In 2010, Reach Out and Read Arizona conducted a statewide parent survey and interview project to explore parent’s perceptions of Reach Out and Read and its impact on them, their children, and their families. Data from 1,672 parent surveys and 100 follow-up parent phone interviews were collected and analyzed. Some key findings include: 99% of parents reported receiving a book from the doctor/nurse during their well child visit; reading aloud advice was reported to be received by 87% of parents at all sites; and, when parents were asked about sources of information having the most impact on their feelings about reading to their child, sixty-five percent (65%) of their sources of information were related to their visits with the pediatrician.
